On The Eve of 9/11

September 10th, 2006  |  Published in Politics, Television  |  5 Comments

I have been on the television flipping around again and going through the cable news stations I have noticed that they are all gearing up for the 5th anniversary of 9/11. However, given the tragic event that occured that day, it astounds me that so many people are trying to come up with myths and other means on how the buildings cam down. I watched a news clip on Fox news tonight about how some people are trying to prove that the building had bombs inside of the lower floors and that the building never would have fallen had it not been for the bombs. Most stating that there is no way the planes could have brought the building down….

On another note, I also saw the ABC Primetime special on all the mothers who were pregnant on 9/11 where most of the fathers didn’t know and even many of the moms didn’t find out until after the tragic events. Needless to say, the special was pretty moving.

So do you think that we’re setting ourselves up for another attack? Do you think that America is bound to be hit again in the coming year?

I don’t know. I tend to drive myself crazy when I let my mind wonder like that. I do know that I pray about all this stuff and that I am so thankful that I am not God, and that He is. Sorry for the blanket answer, it just goes in circles in my brain. I think about the scripture about it being bad for nursing mothers in “those days” and then I think about people making it into what it isn’t. So I just pray and wonder what will happen next. I was a product of Columbine. That was a big deal to me, and so when this happend, it just sealed it, that our country wasn’t safe. I think I was in a bubble until then.

Why the coming year as opposed to any other year already passed or beyond? And by hit do you mean at a level akin to 9/11 in terms of scope and tragedy and response? What about terrorist attacks in other countries?

I gave the chapel talk at Trinity U. in San Antonio on 9/10 and opened up mentioning that on the 5th anniversary of 9/11, 8,500 people around the world were going to die of AIDS, 30,000 kids were going to die because they had no ability to go on living, and so on. Almost 3000 people lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. Not to denigrate 9/11 in any way but to challenge how we think about what human lives mean, the essence of fear/hope, and above all the nature of what constitutes an urgent “tragedy” in our minds.
