A cool front came through Austin on Saturday night and it has felt amazing today. So much so that I am headed back out in the yard to get some more yard work done. I’ve been busy around the house replacing windows and doors and trying to get the yard back in shape for the upcoming summer.

I’ll have to post some picutres of all the stuff that I have been doing the past few weeks. It’s been quite a change around the house for sure. But until then, I’m headed back outside to get some work done.

I recently attended a Social Media Breakfast here in Austin. Tim Walker was the speaker that morning and had a lot of history and insight to share. It was great to connect with a lot of old friends and even meet some news ones.

During the Q&A with Tim, there was lady that asked a question about content. In her question she made mention that the internet, blogs, and other forms of posting content has become a bit overwhelming. She added that even though she uses an RSS reader, she finds that so many people post simply to post, rather than having good content that becomes relevant to readers. She wasn’t reffering to the family blogs, the blogs where people simply post pictures and updates for their friends and family and not so much for the general media.

Her comment has made me think a lot about why I post. Why I feel the need to write or post material just to post. I clearly don’t post for family and friends as I rarely give updates about what is going on in my life. But rather, make posts about what I am thinking or feel. And I have had thoughts at times that I “need” to post because I haven’t in awhile. I know that content is king as they say and that is what brings people to a blog. But I’m not going to post, just to post anymore. I am done with that pressure.

So here to posting when I want and what I want.

Those of you in the Austin and surrounding areas have more than likely noticed that KXAN and the NBC affiliate are no longer on the air. Due to disputes between Time Warner Cable and LIN, the company that owns KXAN, Time Warner has pulled the station from their Austin market. Currently, if you are a Time Warner customer you have no access to shows like “The Office”, “ER” and “HEROES”, just to name a few.

Whether you agree with the negotiations on who is wrong or right in this situation, I don’t really care. What I care about is the fact that I pay Time Warner a lot of money for the services that I have with them and I want to get my money’s worth. I want the NBC station back on the air. If it’s KXAN, fine. I am even fine with a San Antonio or Waco station being broadcast on the air, just bring it back.

I know full well that Time Warner won’t be crediting my bill for services that are no longer being provided. Guess who is having to pay for this little dispute? Their customers.

Starbucks is slated to close about 600 of their retail stores around the country. Here in Austin, Texas, they are scheduled to close two stores, one of which is located close to my home. Granted, there are about 4 Starbucks stores in a 1 miles radius of my house and the one closing is one that I do not frequent. However, I was surprised to learn that this particular store is closing since it’s located in a new retail development that is booming in South Austin. It’s also located right off of Interstate 35 and is fairly easy to get to should you exit the highway for some brew.

Regardless of the location and patronage, do you think Starbucks grew too much, too fast? I remember a few years ago when Starbucks was tooting their horn on how many stores they were opening each and every week. I also remember that some market analysts speculated that the rapid growth of the retail stores would one day come to bite Starbucks in the butt. It looks like that time has finally come.

The majority of retailers out there forced to close 600 stores would consider this a huge loss. Granted Starbucks is taking quite a hit for many of these stores. The one in South Austin alone hasn’t been open for more than a year. But given the 1000’s of retail locations they currently have open, is this truly a hit in the pants?

I love a Starbucks drink just like the next person. But I have to admit it’s not always a place that I frequent. I’m on a budget and Starbucks is one of those places that I use for a “treat” or the occasional meeting place. I stick to the packaged Starbucks coffee and brew at home at a substantially lower cost.

Does anyone else think that Starbucks grew too much, too fast?

Saturday night I was in a wreck. I didn’t see it coming. I had parked in the huge pakring lot under I-35 near 6th street to meet up with some friends that were leaving Austin for Grad school. After a fun dinner with friends I headed back to my truck to head home for the evening. Little did I know that a couple from Hoston was trying to squeeze their small Toyota into a the smaller part of the entryway that no car could have made it through. Because their car wasn’t moving and I thought they were aware they wouldn’t fit into entry way my truck was blocking, I decided to pull out of the parking lot into the south bound feeder road. Low and behold, they had pulled into the spot and another car had taken their position in the road and I nailed the car from the passenger side.

I saw the entire thing happen too! As my headlights lit both the driver and passenger up, I saw the glass from their window completely implode on the car. The driver of the other vehicle ended up being taken to Brackendridge hospital here in Austin and I walked away with very little damage on my truck and no injury to myself. It really made me take a step back from life for just a quick moment that night. My mind has been running since I hit her on Saturday.

It hasn’t been anything profound, but it has caused me to stop and just think about life, and what it is that I take for granted and value. I hope and pray that the driver of the other vehicle was more shaken up by the incident than actually hurt. (no blood or anything) – The passenger walked away with no injury either.

The other afternoon, I walked out of my house after being home for a few hours to discover a huge limb from the tree in the font yard completely blocking me in my driveway. I am so thankful that the tree didn’t hit my truck. Needless to say, I ended up maneuvering my truck out of the driveway, through the neighbors yard and into the street.

What is ironic about this whole thing is that I called a tree trimming company a few days before to get an estimate to get the tree limbs off my house and clean up what the previous owner “tried” to do. This site is currently sitting in my driveway until Friday morning.

I arrived into work today to find the first of many April Fool’s jokes in the office and around the net. However, little did I realize that it was in fact April Fools. The company dress code at work is pretty relaxed. We can wear shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops, etc. As I sat down to read my e-mail, the president of our company had sent out a company wide e-mail addressing some of the dress code issues and a few changes that he wanted make. It was even attached to the official company letterhead through our e-mail program. Basically it took me about an hour to realize that we infact did not need to wear suits and ties along with dress shoes and the entire getup. Hoover’s is a pretty relaxed place to work for the most part so the entire thing caught me off guard to say the least. I was thinking about where I was going to be able to find a few suites without breaking the bank.

Google and a few other companies also had their share of pranks for the day. I got pranked for sure.

So I recently had the opportunity to help a friend here in Austin with a web project that she and her man to be were trying to put together for their upcoming wedding. Becky designed a website (which is fantastic) that showcases many of the amazing pictures that their wedding photographer took here in Austin and created a honeymoon registry where their friends and family can purchase a portion of their honeymoon. I had the opportunity to develop the site and do the design on the database that functions the registry portion of their site. All of us, Becky, Matt, and myself had such a fun time seeing the site come together and our ideas and hard work finally pay off. You should check it out at www.mattandbeckycampbell.com

I hope that this little website is a huge hit for them and that their friends and family will find this an enjoyable way to know what is going on in their lives and everything leading up to the wedding.
